Things to look out for when buying Gold Ornaments in India :
- What is Hallmarking of a Gold Jewellery ?
A Hallmark is an assurance of the percentage of gold present in a desired Jewellery.
A BIS Stamp along with the shopkeepers code is engraved in the Jewellery .
A licence has to be obtained by the shopkeeper in order to sell Hallmark Jewellery. Please do not buy jewelry if only 916 is engraved on it.. Ask for the BIS Hallmark stamp and Shop's code engraved on jewelry at all times.
- How much Purity does a Carat actually carry ?
Below is a list of correct quality of pure gold available in desired carats according to Hallmark.
24 Carat - 99.9 %
23 Carat - 95.8 %
22 Carat - 91.6 %
18 Carat - 75.0 %
- Why can Jewellery not be made in 100 % Gold ?
A pure gold is ductile and hence is easily elastic. To give a proper shape and strength to the jewellery, three types - silver, copper or silver-copper mix are used. It is then, it gets a desired strength.
Thus most jewelleries are made in 91.6 % i.e. 22 carat. Remember the Advertise by Kalyan Jewellers in which Amitabh Specifically mentions about 916 hallmark 22 carat gold.
GOLD BARS :
24 Carat gold bar comes in two variations : 99.5 and 99.9 . Both are purchased for pure investment purposes.
# Please Note :
(1) Branded stone studded Jewelleries are normally made in 18 Carat hallmark gold(75%). It is Because a claw is designed to hold on the real diamond properly. Hence more strength is required and so copper mixing is more.
(2) KDM ornaments are not Hallmarked. And hence it is not a guaranteed jewellery. KDM ornaments have Maximum upto 85 % gold purity.
