Who is a Counselor ? What does he do ? How does he work ? What makes him approachable ? Why is he better at at his Job ? All of these queries will be answered by thorough observation of a counselor.
The most fundamental qualities of a good counselor when analysed comes down to these four qualities mentioned below :-

(1) Listen : Your client has walked in with a problem, an issue that is disturbing his daily life, his normal presence. He is here to speak out. What do you do ? You give 100 percent attention to what he wants to say. He has bought your time for you to listen. In many cases all that the clients want is a release, a person to share with. Only then you do a good Job.

(2) Understand : You do a good job listening, he is looking upto you with a lost vision. What do u do ? Understand him. Analyse his present temperament. Gather as much as information about the issue. Ask him the spot-on questions and most of all why they are here for counseling.

(3) Empathise : Now that he in tune with you, what can keep him going ? Yes, Empathising with him. Stepping into his shoes and analysing his area of discomfort and how the issue is bogging his mind. And then, politely bringing him to step into the shoes of reality, that is, possible options open for the client to consider.

(4) Switch off : So, now you have done a good job and you get back to your home. You mingle well with your family, your social life and then have a goodnight sleep without having you troubled by clients issues. There it is, you have learnt to switch off. This art comes with experience.

And below are four qualties that run parallel to fundamentals :-

(5) Confidentiality : For any client to rhyme with the counselor, it is very important that his information is not let out in the open. The counselor should be a confidant to the client. It plays a upperhand in disclosing the problem.

(6) Committed : With every case, the counselor needs to be committed as ever. The determination to get into the issue should be rock solid. The counselor should always aim for self growth, learn new ways to grasp the scenario of the clients.

(7) Non-Jugdemental : A good counselor will wait for the actual insights into the issue and what the clients has actually come for and then suggest possible  doors and windows open to them. He should not force his point of view on the client.

(8) Encourager : Guiding the client through continual stages and encourage the person for his well being. It is like a 'Pat on the back' for quicker healing of the clients.
